Hiring Veterans and Syracuse’s Business Case

 

Despite an increasing number of companies pledging to support hiring military (including Bradley-Morris, Inc. Joining Forces with the First Lady to Hire American Veterans), recent headlines and reports focused on the progress of veteran employment indicate gaps remain on both sides of the hiring equation.

Monster Worldwide Inc.’s Military.com reported 75% of veterans confident about skills they bring to civilian workforce whereas only 39% of employers believe vets are appropriately prepared to compete for civilian jobs out of the military. Those employers need to realize that while transitioning military may not always be ready to communicate / compete for jobs, but their transferable skills are very valuable in today’s hiring environment.

 

 

 

For instance, a monthly report from Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families indicates that for all veterans a .7% decrease in unemployment rates over 2011 is noted (see table below).
