The Navy supplied many lessons to Kenneth Myers, Sr. The former electrician’s mate first class joined the United States Navy initially for the education and training it provided, but he also wanted to be of service to our country. Over his 20 years of enlistment, he was stationed in a variety of places, including Naval Station Mayport to serve on the USS Forrestal CV-59 and the USS Taylor FFG-50; and at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. He was also a recruiter in his hometown of Fort Myers, Florida, which was his favorite duty station. His duties were as varied as the locations where he served. Besides recruiting, Myers worked as an electrician and as a member of the military police. The travelling he was able to do was the highlight of his service, especially seeing the Holy Land. Myers believes companies should hire veterans because they are reliable and work well under stress. For Myers, the most valuable skill learned during his service was dependability. “I didn't have a mentor, so I became a mentor to others,” he said. “I told my people to make the best out of every opportunity, to see the sights, and eat the food.” When it came to landing his current position, Myers attended a RecruitMilitary career fair in Jacksonville, Florida. "I attended many job fairs and hiring conferences and had a few second interviews, but that was it,” he said. “This time, I decided to wear a black suit, a white shirt, and a power tie. I received a call on Thursday right after the job fair from a manager at National Oilwell Varco. They wanted to interview me before they left town. Brad Lewis interviewed me in a hotel lobby for about an hour and a half, and then hired me. He also served in the World's Greatest Navy. Now I’m a field service technician with the company.” Myers offered three tips for veterans transitioning or seeking new careers: - Above all, stay positive! - Be able to talk about your resume. - Dress for success – it worked for me. "My new job is going great!" he related. "I started on January 5, 2015, in Alice, Texas. My being able to adapt and communicate has helped me a lot. The mechanical and electrical knowledge that I learned in the World's Greatest Navy also helped me land this job."
