Search & Employ® Magazine

July / August 2012

Welcome to job seekers who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, veterans who already have civilian work experience, members of the National Guard and reserves, and military spouses. Our company’s continuing mission: to help men and women who have military backgrounds connect with employers, franchisors, and educational institutions.

I am pleased to announce a development that will help us greatly in our mission. John Melia has joined our company in a director level position. He will be based in Houston and will specialize in selling our products and services to companies and agencies that work in the energy sector of the economy.

John is well known in the veteran community as the founder of the Wounded Warrior Project. He served as an infantry corporal in the United States Marine Corps, and was a first lieutenant in the Maryland Army National Guard. To learn more about John’s outstanding service to our country and the veteran community, see page 50 of this magazine.

“Right next door” to the article about John is a report on the continuing success of our Hiring Our Heroes/RecruitMilitary Veteran Opportunity Expos, which we produce in collaboration with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. A report in our May/June 2012 issue said that employers exhibiting at our events expect to make an average of three job offers as a result of exhibiting. We based that report on employer surveys; on page 51 of the issue you are reading, we report on more recent surveys.

These reports are good news for job seekers who attend our events. In the article on page 51, we run the numbers showing that those men and women have a pretty good chance of getting a job offer as a result of attending.

Speaking of numbers, this issue has a record 15 articles on specific veterans’ civilian work experience. The veterans speak for themselves, explaining how they found jobs in the two sectors of the economy featured in this issue – transportation/logistics and manufacturing – and providing job-hunting tips for transitioning and veteran military.

And we have a couple tips of our own: 1) attend the Expos in your region and 2) register as a job seeker in our database at www.recruitmilitary.com. Recruiters working for employers, franchisors, and educational institutions are constantly searching the database – and so are our own recruiters who are working to fill job orders given to us by employers. All of us are looking for detailed information on the job seekers. So, when you register, I advise you to fill out the entire registration form and post a well-crafted resume.

Best of luck in your job search, and thank you for serving in the armed forces of the United States.
