Search & Employ® Magazine

November / December 2010

Welcome to job seekers who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, veterans who already have civilian work experience, members of the National Guard and reserves, and military spouses. Our company’s continuing mission: to help men and women who have military backgrounds connect with employers, franchisors, and educational institutions.

This issue’s cover articles focus on opportunities in law enforcement. In those articles, you will read about a wide range of law-enforcement occupations in both the public and private sectors.

As you will note throughout our articles, law-enforcement agencies are eager to hire people who can lead and work in teams, people who are disciplined and can get the job done—people like you. The same is true for employers throughout Corporate America. In these tough times, companies are especially eager to hire employees who will take to the job immediately, work with great interest and enthusiasm—and learn, learn, learn!

Our feature articles describe opportunities in information technology (IT), a field that includes industries and occupations related to computer technology. The occupations vary widely, from computer design to website design and development, and from computer programming to network administration. In your job search, you should use specific terms to identify your targeted field, rather than the general “information technology” or “computers.”

There are plenty of opportunities for veterans in both law enforcement and IT – even veterans who did not work in those fields while in the military. Such veterans can use educational benefits available under the Post-9/11GI Bill to acquire the skills they need.

Register with us. To further your job search and to make your own data searchable by employers, franchisors, and educational institutions, we encourage you to register as a job seeker and post your resume at www.recruitmilitary.com. There, you will find thousands of job postings, and you will join a vast database searched by recruiters nationwide. Don’t have a resume? Hire one of our experts to write one for you.

As a registered, active candidate, you will also receive The VetTen, a monthly electronic newsletter loaded with employment and other opportunities and containing a link to an online copy of the current issue of Search & Employ®.

Go to our Expos. We also encourage you to attend the RecruitMilitary Opportunity Expos in your area. We have nine events remaining for November and December 2010, and 60 events scheduled for 2011, see our schedule on page 28 of this issue. At those events, recruiters representing employers, franchisors, and educational institutions will be on hand to discuss a multitude of options.

DHS Hiring/Job Fair. I am pleased to report that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Second Annual Veterans Hiring/Job Fair, which we produced on September 25, was a great success. That event, at Virginia Beach Convention Center, enabled men and women with military backgrounds to see major components of DHS in one forum, attend informal workshops, and speak with DHS recruiters within the department.

Nearly 1,500 veterans, transitioning military, and military spouses attended the event. Twelve units of DHS exhibited, representing the department’s four areas of activity: (1) counterterrorism, (2) border security, (3) preparedness, response, recovery, and (4) immigration. For a list and descriptions of the various units that make up DHS, visit www.dhs.gov.

And finally: Talk to everyone who has opportunities for veterans. Do not rule out any business or industry until you have discussed the opportunities with a recruiter.

Thank you for serving in the armed forces of the United States.
