Search & Employ® Magazine
July / August 2009
Welcome to job seekers who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, veterans who already have civilian work experience, members of the National Guard and reserves, and military spouses! This is the ninth issue of Search & Employ. Its continuing mission: to help men and women who have military backgrounds connect with veteran-friendly employers, franchisors, and educational institutions.
This issue’s cover story focuses on opportunities in transportation and logistics, and our feature subject is opportunities in manufacturing. The overall employment news in those fields is not great—the number of people being hired is off considerably from last year. Yet, that number is still substantial—there is still plenty of opportunity for veterans with the necessary skill sets.
Here are supporting figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics bulletin, Job Openings and Labor Turnover: March 2009:
- In March 2008, employers in transportation, warehousing, and utilities hired 153,000 people. The number for March 2009 was 143,000.
- In March 2008, employers in manufacturing hired 302,000 people; in March 2009, 233,000 people.
Companies in transportation, logistics, and manufacturing are eager to find people who can lead and work in teams, people who are disciplined and can get the job done—people like you. The same is true for employers throughout Corporate America. In these tough times, companies are especially eager to hire employees who will take to the job immediately, work with great interest and enthusiasm—and learn, learn, learn!
To further your job search and to make your data searchable by employers, franchisors, and educational institutions, we encourage you to register as a job seeker at www.recruitmilitary.com. There, you will find thousands of job postings, and you will join a vast database that is searched by recruiters nationwide.
We also encourage you to attend the RecruitMilitary Career Fairs in your area. Recruiters representing employers, franchisors, and educational institutions will be on hand to discuss a multitude of options.
And finally: Talk to everyone who has opportunities for veterans. Do not rule out any business or industry until you have discussed the opportunities with a recruiter. And do not confuse occupations with industries. For example, a veteran who is interested in an occupation in information technology should not confine his or her search to firms in the I/T industry—note that the MillerCoors ad on page 20 of this issue lists I/T as an available opportunity!
Thank you for serving in the armed forces of the United States.
