Search & Employ® Magazine
May / June 2009
Welcome to all job seekers who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, veterans who already have civilian work experience, members of the National Guard and reserves, and military spouses! This is the eighth issue of Search & Employ.SM Its continuing mission: to help men and women who have military backgrounds connect with veteran-friendly employers, franchisors, and educational institutions.
This issue’s cover story focuses on opportunities in the energy industry—which is getting mixed results in these tough economic times. The demand for energy is down, but two of President Obama’s policy initiatives promise to build up the energy industry. He wants to upgrade the electrical grid, and he strongly supports alternative energy research, development, generation, and distribution. Meanwhile, jobs will continue to become available in the traditional energy sectors as workers retire and energy companies continue to work on new plants and transmission systems.
Energy companies are eager to find people who can lead and work in teams, people who are disciplined and can get the job done—people like you. The same is true for employers throughout Corporate America. In these tough times, companies are especially eager to hire employees who will take to the job immediately, work with great interest and enthusiasm—and learn, learn, learn!
A second group of articles in this issue discusses educational opportunities that are available to veterans. In these times, it makes good sense for veterans to utilize the Montgomery GI Bill benefits that are available to them. And in August, a fresh set of benefits will become available via the Post9/11 GI Bill; for more information on those benefits, visit www.gibill.va.gov.
To further your job search and to make your data searchable by employers, franchisors, and educational institutions, we encourage you to register as a job seeker at www.recruitmilitary.com. There, you will find thousands of job postings, and you will join a vast database that is searched by recruiters nationwide.
We also encourage you to attend the RecruitMilitary Career Fairs in your area. Recruiters representing employers, franchisors, and educational institutions will be on hand to discuss a multitude of options.
And finally: Talk to everyone who has opportunities for veterans. Do not rule out any business or industry until you have discussed the opportunities with a recruiter. And do not confuse occupations with industries. For example, a veteran who is interested in an occupation in information technology should not confine his or her search to firms in the I/T industry—note that the MillerCoors ad on page 18 of this issue lists I/T as an available opportunity!
Thank you for serving in the armed forces of the United States.
