RecruitMilitary and U.S. Chamber of Commerce To Collaborate on 50 Veteran Hiring Events in 2012
Cincinnati, OH (PR Log) April 4, 2012 – RecruitMilitary and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are pleased to announce that they will continue to collaborate on career fair hiring events for our nation’s veterans and their spouses. RecruitMilitary produced 19 such events, called Hiring Our Heroes/RecruitMilitary Veteran Opportunity Expos, from September 2011 through March 2012. The continuation will cover 50 events to be held from April through December 2012. As an added feature for 2012, GE will conduct employment workshops and one-on-one career mentoring sessions at many of the events.
The Expos will continue to benefit job seekers who have military backgrounds and businesses that want to hire great employees. In addition, franchisors will be on hand to discuss business-ownership opportunities; and representatives of universities, colleges, and trade and technical institutions will discuss educational opportunities. The events will be free to transitioning servicemembers, veterans who already have civilian work experience, members of the National Guard and reserve forces, and their families.
To increase the number of exhibitors and maximize career opportunities for the job seekers, RecruitMilitary will continue to offer companies that are members of the U.S. Chamber and local chambers a 10% discount on the cost of their exhibition booths. Additionally, RecruitMilitary will continue further price reductions for small businesses (businesses that have less than 50 employees), and even lower rates for veteran-owned small businesses.
The events produced by RecruitMilitary are part of the U.S. Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes veteran hiring career fair initiative. The Chamber began the initiative in March 2011, and has scheduled 400 events for 2012.
“We are delighted to partner with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to help them accomplish their important mission of producing 400 veteran career fairs this year,” said Drew Myers, president of RecruitMilitary and a former captain in the United States Marine Corps. “Our partnership has strategically positioned us to deliver great results together at our Hiring Our Heroes/RecruitMilitary Veteran Opportunity Expos, and it’s already yielding big results. Attendance has been averaging over 475 job seekers; and, based on exhibitor feedback on a recent sampling of our most recent 10 Expos, employers expect to extend 2,500 interviews and ultimately put forth job offers to over 1,000 job seekers.”
“RecruitMilitary has been a tremendous partner since we launched Hiring Our Heroes a year ago and we’re thrilled to have this relationship grow even stronger going forward,” said Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel, founder and executive director of the U.S. Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes program. “To make a difference in the staggering unemployment rates facing the veterans community, we need organizations like ours to work together. I have no doubt that Hiring Our Heroes and RecruitMilitary can demonstrate to employers that hiring a veteran isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.”
RecruitMilitary will produce the Expos in Atlanta (June 28, October 25), Baltimore (May 24, September 27), Boston (April 12, September 6), Charlotte (June 7, November 15), Chicago (April 5, October 11), Cincinnati (May 31, September 20), Colorado Springs (July 12), Columbus (August 23), Dallas (July 19, November 15), Denver (April 19, September 13), Houston (April 5, August 9, December 6), Jacksonville (June 14, November 1), Kansas City (October 11), Las Vegas (November 29), Los Angeles (June 21, October 4), Miami (August 23), Minneapolis (August 2), Mobile (May 10), New York (April 26, September 13), Oakland (May 3, November 29), Philadelphia (July 26, November 1), Phoenix (October 18), Pittsburgh (October 18), Richmond (August 16), Saint Louis (July 12), San Antonio (September 13), San Diego (September 6, December 13), Seattle/Tacoma (June 7, November 8), Shreveport (September 27), Tampa (October 4), Virginia Beach (May 17, November 8), and Washington (June 28). RecruitMilitary produces its Expos in cooperation with The American Legion (http://www.legion.org).
“This is an especially great year to hire veterans – new tax credits for doing so apply throughout the year,” said Larry Slagel, senior vice president of sales at RecruitMilitary and a former captain in the United States Marine Corps. “The credits are available via the Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 (www.doleta.gov/business/incentives/opptax/), which President Obama signed into law on November 21, 2011. The credits range from $2,400 to $9,600, depending on whether the veteran has a disability and how long he or she has been unemployed – and they apply to individuals who begin to work for an employer from November 22, 2011, through December 31, 2012.”
The Vow to Hire Heroes Act also established a new target group of unemployed veterans. This group is similar to a group defined in the Recovery Act of 2009, which has expired. One major difference is that, under the Recovery Act, a veteran had to have left the service within 5 years of the hiring date to qualify. The Vow to Hire Heroes Act imposes no such limit. Employers can now get credit for hiring highly skilled veterans who have many years of civilian work experience.
